How Selvo manages 1,200 monitors as code with Terraform

Selvo is a cloud data platform used by thousands of organizations to store, query and share data. Its services run across several clouds and regions, and new endpoints launch every week.

Challenge

Monitors were created by hand in a dashboard, so coverage drifted. New services often launched without checks, and old monitors kept alerting for endpoints that no longer existed.

Solution

Selvo moved every monitor into Terraform using the Navy provider. Monitors, alert routes and status page components are reviewed in pull requests and applied in the same pipeline as the services.

Results

  • Result 01

1,200 monitors managed in Terraform with no manual changes in the dashboard

  • Result 02

Every new production service launches with monitors on day one

  • Result 03

Stale monitors reduced from around 180 to zero after the first cleanup

Story

Monitors as code at Selvo

Coverage that drifted

Selvo’s infrastructure grows every week. When monitors were created by hand, coverage depended on who remembered to add them. Some services launched without checks. Others were retired, but their monitors kept sending alerts for months.

One source of truth

The infrastructure team moved every monitor into Terraform with the Navy provider. A service module now includes its HTTP monitors, alert routing and status page component. Reviewers see monitoring changes in the same pull request as the code, and nothing reaches production without a check.

Heartbeats for scheduled work

Selvo also runs thousands of scheduled jobs for maintenance and data replication. Each one now pings a Navy cron heartbeat when it finishes. If a job does not report in on time, the owning team gets an alert before the delay affects customers.

Today Selvo manages 1,200 monitors entirely in code. The dashboard is read-only for most engineers, and audits of monitoring coverage take minutes instead of days.

“Our monitors live in Terraform next to the services they watch, so nothing ships to production without a check already in place.”

Selvo's infrastructure team adopted the Navy Terraform provider in 2024.
