7.8 · HIGH
Published Mar 11, 2014 linux CWE-476 EPSS 7.04% (94th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2014-0101 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting linux linux_kernel. It was published on March 11, 2014 and has a CVSS 2.0 base score of 7.8 (HIGH).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 2.0 base score of 7.8, rated HIGH. It can be exploited remotely over the network. No authentication or special privileges are required for exploitation.

Technical Description

The sctp_sf_do_5_1D_ce function in net/sctp/sm_statefuns.c in the Linux kernel through 3.13.6 does not validate certain auth_enable and auth_capable fields before making an sctp_sf_authenticate call, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via an SCTP handshake with a modified INIT chunk and a crafted AUTH chunk before a COOKIE_ECHO chunk.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from linux. Update linux_kernel to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
