7.4 · HIGHOverview
CVE-2019-14899 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting freebsd freebsd. It was published on December 11, 2019 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.4 (HIGH).
This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.4, rated HIGH. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.
Technical Description
A vulnerability was discovered in Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, MacOS, iOS, and Android that allows a malicious access point, or an adjacent user, to determine if a connected user is using a VPN, make positive inferences about the websites they are visiting, and determine the correct sequence and acknowledgement numbers in use, allowing the bad actor to inject data into the TCP stream. This provides everything that is needed for an attacker to hijack active connections inside the VPN tunnel.
Remediation
Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from freebsd. Update freebsd to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
