CVE-2019-15902

5.6 · MEDIUM
Published Sep 4, 2019 linux CWE-200 EPSS 0.59% (46th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2019-15902 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting linux linux_kernel. It was published on September 4, 2019 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.6 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.6, rated MEDIUM. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical Description

A backporting error was discovered in the Linux stable/longterm kernel 4.4.x through 4.4.190, 4.9.x through 4.9.190, 4.14.x through 4.14.141, 4.19.x through 4.19.69, and 5.2.x through 5.2.11. Misuse of the upstream "x86/ptrace: Fix possible spectre-v1 in ptrace_get_debugreg()" commit reintroduced the Spectre vulnerability that it aimed to eliminate. This occurred because the backport process depends on cherry picking specific commits, and because two (correctly ordered) code lines were swapped.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from linux. Update linux_kernel to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
