5.7 · MEDIUM
Published Jul 29, 2020 gnu CWE-362 EPSS 1.59% (74th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2020-15707 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting gnu grub2. It was published on July 29, 2020 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.7 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.7, rated MEDIUM. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical Description

Integer overflows were discovered in the functions grub_cmd_initrd and grub_initrd_init in the efilinux component of GRUB2, as shipped in Debian, Red Hat, and Ubuntu (the functionality is not included in GRUB2 upstream), leading to a heap-based buffer overflow. These could be triggered by an extremely large number of arguments to the initrd command on 32-bit architectures, or a crafted filesystem with very large files on any architecture. An attacker could use this to execute arbitrary code and bypass UEFI Secure Boot restrictions. This issue affects GRUB2 version 2.04 and prior versions.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from gnu. Update grub2 to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
