7.1 · HIGH
Published Dec 19, 2022 gnu CWE-787 EPSS 0.87% (56th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2022-3775 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting gnu grub2. It was published on December 19, 2022 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.1 (HIGH).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.1, rated HIGH. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical Description

When rendering certain unicode sequences, grub2's font code doesn't proper validate if the informed glyph's width and height is constrained within bitmap size. As consequence an attacker can craft an input which will lead to a out-of-bounds write into grub2's heap, leading to memory corruption and availability issues. Although complex, arbitrary code execution could not be discarded.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from gnu. Update grub2 to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
