Published Jan 16, 2026 isaacs CWE-22

Overview

CVE-2026-23745 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting isaacs tar. It was published on January 16, 2026 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.1 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.1, rated MEDIUM. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. No authentication or special privileges are required for exploitation.

Technical Description

node-tar is a Tar for Node.js. The node-tar library (<= 7.5.2) fails to sanitize the linkpath of Link (hardlink) and SymbolicLink entries when preservePaths is false (the default secure behavior). This allows malicious archives to bypass the extraction root restriction, leading to Arbitrary File Overwrite via hardlinks and Symlink Poisoning via absolute symlink targets. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.5.3.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from isaacs. Update tar to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
